Kanjivaram · kolam-silk-unroll opening

Kanjivaram

A rice-flour kolam draws itself, then temple silk unrolls in zari gold.

Guests arrive at a red-oxide threshold lit by brass kuthuvilakku lamps. One tap and a sikku kolam is drawn in rice flour as a single unbroken line; the jasmine thread on a roll of Kanjivaram silk snaps and the silk unrolls across the floor, turning the white kolam into woven zari. Every celebration then appears as its own silk swatch with a temple border, from Nichayathartham to Muhurtham and reception, in maroon, mustard and banana-leaf green.
