Indian Marigold

A marigold doorway tied with sacred thread opens onto a lake palace at sunrise.

A curtain of marigold garlands hangs beneath a mango-leaf toran, tied shut with a red-and-gold mauli thread. At a touch the thread unwinds, a brass coin stamped with the couple's initials tumbles into the aarti thali with a bright ting, and the strands swing apart in a shower of petals onto a palace on the water at first light. Each celebration, from haldi to reception, gets its own colour, and lighting the brass diya sets a ring of lamps aglow across the schedule. Saffron, marigold, sindoor and mango-leaf green, finished in burnished brass.
