Sakura · folding-fan opening

Sakura

A lacquered paper fan unfolds on washi, and cherry petals drift through.

Quiet, unhurried and very Japanese in spirit. A closed folding fan rests on kozo washi paper beneath a pale spring moon, bound with a three-strand mizuhiki cord. One tap and the knot slips, the fan rises and opens pleat by pleat, each fold catching the light, to reveal a hand-painted leaf of sumi branches and blossom while petals scatter. The scroll that follows is all white space and ink: an ensō monogram drawn in one brush stroke, a shikishi-board countdown, deckled washi event cards, and a vermilion hanko seal guests can press themselves.
