Disco Night

Draw the silk cord: the silver fringe parts, a chrome mirrorball lowers into the pin spot and the room fills with light.

A couture disco soirée, lit like a magazine shoot: black velvet, smoked champagne and polished chrome. Guests find a silver-foil fringe curtain glinting under warm house light, a mirrorball hanging before it and the guest of honour's name set like a cover line. One draw of the ivory silk cord and the catch lets go: the fringe parts into two tied-back swags, the house lights fall, the ball pays out on its chain, the pin spot strikes through the haze and hundreds of facets throw soft caustics across the velvet as the light finds the name. Inside: a note from the hosts beneath a chrome milestone numeral, a countdown in foil on lacquer, a mirrorball guests set turning themselves, the order of the evening on velvet programme cards and an ivory reply card.
