Pull the silk ribbon: a pâtisserie box opens on a Lambeth cake in a blush salon hung with pearls, the tapers catch, and a breath leaves only smoke.

A patisserie still life for a milestone birthday, lit like a photograph. In a pale-blush Parisian salon of panelled walls, strings of pearls are swagged from satin bows above a dusty-blush pâtisserie box on ivory linen, foil-printed in silver with the guest of honour's initial and tied with an ivory silk bow beside fresh garden roses and a loose rope of pearls. One tap pulls the ribbon: the bow slips loose, the lid lifts away and the four walls fall open flat around a tall three-tier Lambeth cake, piped in ivory and dusty-blush buttercream with overpiped swags, ruffles, shell borders and silver dragées, on a silver stand tied with satin. The room sinks to a rosy dusk, five beeswax tapers catch one by one, then a breath blows them out in curls of smoke and the light comes back up. Inside, on blush silk: a note from the hosts under a satin bow, a countdown card hung with pearls, a petit gâteau you blow out yourself to make a wish, foil-edged event cards and a reply card banded in silk.
